I never set out to start a company. I set out to find better things for my family — and when I couldn't find them, I started making them myself.

It began at the kitchen counter, then took over a corner of the workshop: small batches, mixed by hand, from a short list of ingredients I could actually pronounce. I wanted gentler stuff for my family, and grooming gear that did the job without a label full of mystery chemicals. One recipe became two, two became a handful, and somewhere along the way the Barn turned into a real small business.

Today, Blackbeard Co is home to two brands — and they couldn't be more different, which is exactly how we like it.

Calico is the calm one. Cooling botanical mists and gentle care for skin that spends its days in the sun and salt air — clean, simple, and soft enough for the whole family. The name comes from the sea: a calico is a patchwork, a gentle mix of good simple things, which is just what's in every bottle. A gentle mix of good ingredients.

Blackbeard's is the loud one. Pirate-grade beard oil, balm, body spray, and pomade in three scents with names like Rum Runner, Blimey Limey, and Aged Tobacco — built for the bearded, the bold, and anyone who's ever wanted to say "Arrr" in public and mean it. Same handmade care as Calico, with a lot more swagger.

Two brands, one workshop, and one rule that hasn't changed since the kitchen counter days: would I put this on my own family? If the answer's yes, it earns a label. If it's no, it doesn't ship.

We're a small outfit in Michigan — me, my family, and 3 happy dogs who supervise closely and contribute nothing but fun. Everything here is still made by hand, in small batches, with the kind of care you can only give when it's personal.
